I also have several patch's from v1.7.2 to v1.8.4.1-ssl but I've only recently tried the two full install versions I have, which are v1.7.2 and v1.8.4.1. I just saw that it loaded and found myself walking in the forest, which is where you first find yourself in the game.
This version ran on my old Windows 7 64bit system and it runs on my new system mentioned above, though I can't say if it'll crash or not at some particular stage in the game. OK, I entered the Obduction upgrade path v1.7.2.
